L’uomo-tributo Hal Willner si dedica stavolta alla canzone marinaresca. Lo spunto glielo forniscono Gore Verbinski e Johnny Depp, regista e protagonista de “I pirati dei Caraibi II“ , qui in veste di produttori esecutivi. Anche se gioca a fare il modesto (“Sono andato a Seattle, ho scelto degli strumentisti e ho invitato a cantare chi si trovava in città sul momento, poi ho fatto lo stesso a New York e Londra), Willner mette insieme un lavoro persino più esagerato del solito, articolato su 43 pezzi e due cd. Ci sono affermati specialisti della ‘tributaria’ sonica (Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave, Bono), bei nomi di culto fra rock e folk (Stan Ridgway, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson) e attempate celebrità (Sting, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry).
Il migliore del lotto è pero il quasi sconosciuto Baby Gramps, dalla voce simile a un didgeridoo. (Antonio Vivaldi)
